An amendment to the act establishing the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has now empowered the fund with the responsibility of providing social security to the aged and unemployed.

The amendment which was passed by the National Assembly recently, is in addition to its mandate on the implementation of Employee Compensation scheme.

The amendment is to be presented to President Goodluck Jonathan for assent.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Board of the NSITF, Chief Ngozi Olejeme, in a statement, expressed confidence that the bill would soon be signed into law.

” These addition responsibilities of providing some forms of social safety net to unemployed and aged person will be done with passion and dedication. The NSITF is well-equipped to execute these new additions,” Olejeme said.

“The President wanted to ensure that workers that sustain injuries in the course of their duties are no longer left to their fate. The signing of the new national minimum wage law without hesitation shows that he is committed to bettering the lives of the Nigerian workers,” she added.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of NSITF, Mr. Munir Abubakar, reiterated that the fund is prepared to take on the implementation of the new responsibilities.

He explained that social security is a collective care arrangement to meet contingencies and other conditions of insecurity due to either deprivations or contingencies or both.
