Ooni’s succession: Oba Akinruntan advises kingmakers

By Ola Ajayi
Ibadan—AS the ancient town of Ile-Ife searches for a successor to late Oba Okunade Sijuwade on the stool of the Ooni of Ife, His imperial majesty, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbo kingdom has advised kingmakers in the town to be careful in their selection process so that the enviable title of Ooni will not be derogated.
Ooni of Ife, Oba Sijuwade Okunade
While appreciating chiefs and indigenes of the town on the steps they have taken so far, he said the quality of a new monarch to be chosen should be well considered.
He said this while speaking in Ibadan.
According to him, interested candidates should not have been struggling for the stool, but, rather, the people should be begging them to accept the offer.
To him, after consideration of other factors and conditions for the emergence of the new king, the pedigree of the person matters a lot.
The wealthy king who made reference to his emergence as the Olugbo of Ugbo kingdom in Ilaje Local Government of Ondo State, noted that it was his people that begged him to accept the title.
Today, he thanked the Almighty God for the way he has helped him to promote the cultural, social and economic values of his kingdom.
He said, “Both Oba Adesoji Aderemi and his successor, Sijuwade did well to
uplift the standard of the throne.
“Infact, Aderemi even became a governor of the defunct Western region in his own time, which further heightened the status or the ancient town both nationally and internationally.
“If the kingmakers decide to install a candidate with a lower status, then the profile of the stool would be lowered,” he said.
On his position as the Chairman, Yoruba Obas Conflict Resolution Committee, he assured that all necessary steps would be taken to unite Obas in the zone so that they would not be marginalised in the scheme of things.
