Lagos graduates 5,951 skill acquisition trainees

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday said only those who are resilient, determined, hardworking and innovative succeed in life.

He spoke at a ceremony for Year 2014 Graduates of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation’s Skills Acquisition Centres held at De Blue Roof, LTV Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

Some 5,951 men and women were trained at the centres.

Ambode said the secret of success was creativity in one’s business.

The governor, represented by Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment Generation Mr Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, said the era of being trained to take up a white collar job is gone.

The era, he said, had been replaced with training for self-reliant, and self-dependent people who will become employers.

He said the greatest asset of any nation consists of a healthy, educated and skilled populace as other infrastructures such as roads, bridges could only be used as catalyst of economic growth.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) Mrs Lola Akande disclosed that the graduands would be receiving the Lagos State Certificate of Competence endorsed by the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) and one that would grant them a seamless transition into any of the Lagos State Technical Colleges for further training, if they so wished, while other graduands would become self-employed/employers of labour, or employees in organisations where they would earn decent living.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu advised the graduands to make judicious use of their acquired skills and be self–employed.
